What if what we’ve learned about History isn’t all there is? There’s probably so much more than meets the eye, more stories, not just His... If we took some time to listen.....if we take some time to feel... Maybe we could write a new book. Maybe we can keep it real. There’s a river running from the present to the past. Time is the current we have some questions we need to ask: What is History? Who is telling the story? Whose voice is missing? Who is getting the glory? Rap: You can deny us a place in time and space in a city and state relying on race to justify the hate that some whites created - you’d be lyin’ to my face to say that I am safe. But I am ok and this is why I’ve stayed - I am courageous I am not afraid Outside of mistakes that have been made - I’m wide awake and my mind’s engaged We gotta listen - listen to what’s real - there’s more to the story, more to be revealed We gotta listen - listen and feel - t here’s more to the story, more to be revealed We gotta listen - listen to what’s real - there’s more to the story, more to be revealed We gotta listen - listen and feel - there’s more to the story, more to be revealed What if what we’ve learned about History isn’t all there is? There’s probably so much more than meets the eye, more stories, not just His... If we took some time to listen.....if we take some time to feel... Maybe we could write a new book. Maybe we can keep it real.

What would you take with you if it was suddenly time to go? How would you feel in a new place with no one you know? How do you keep from being someone new? Cos I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU. Chorus: People all over the world are moving all the time- If you stand still its like a river flowing by EMigration MIgration, IMmigration too... so many things that I could be But I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU Where did you go when you got where you are? Did you arrive from somewhere near or far? So many friends you haven’t met yet here (hold) Do you feel brave or shy? Are new friends saying ‘Hi’ So many things for you to see….you add your ME to make it WE And I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU and YOU and YOU (8) I’m glad you’re here you are a gift to me Let us connect as Portland family Did you get the help you need? A new home? A new community Do not assimilate - stay you let’s integrate - now you’re a part of this WE - WE needed YOU CHORUS: People all over the world are moving all the time- If you stand still its like a river flowing by EMigration MIgration, IMmigration too... so many things that I could be But I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU No I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU No I can’t be ME without WE and that means YOU and YOU and YOU …

We like our Jazz in Portland - it soothes us with it’s song We turn Stumptown to “Jump-Town” - Jammin' all night long The river rose and took our homes - those were tough times we weathered We had the blues, but Jazz was the glue - that held us all together Chorus: If the piano player throws you a crazy chord - Improvise - set it right If life throws you a hard time - you improvise your life Discrimination - HOPE! We got it!….Improvise….. (spoken) Many people think of Vanport as a tragic event, but it was a thriving city, the second largest in Oregon, with a population of 42,000 at its peak! Red Line Drawn - NOPE!….We got it!…..Improvise….. (spoken) Vanport had its own infrastructure - hospital, schools, shopping, theater, and 24 hour day care support that included meals for working parents. Determination - YES!....We got it!……Improvise… (spoken)Vanport was built in 110 days and was intended as temporary housing for ship builders during World War 2 Vanport was built on 650 acres of Columbia River flood plain. People came to Vanport from all over - bringing more diversity and culture to Portland. Rap: The vanport flood is going down but - everybody is courageous The courage is contagious and - the river is outrageous Houses are floating up - but we are crumbling down Some friends are lost - they may have drowned Houses are going Round and and round, water surrounds Debris is floating on top of the water - it looks like crowns Everybody wasn’t white and black - some were from China After the flood in fact - a lot of us moved to Albina (spoken) After the flood it was particularly hard for African American survivors to find new housing, as they were not free to live in many Portland neighborhods. Chorus: If the piano player throws you a crazy chord Improvise - set it right If life throws you a hard time - you improvise your life

In Mama’s suitcase there’s a garden - waiting to grow - just waiting to grow Papa’s suitcase holds our memories - waiting for us - for us to come home And when it was time -I did not know -where would we go? How long would we be there? I didn’t know what I’d want, but I knew what we’d need there.... Chorus: So I packed up our HOPE - next to RESILIENCE Wrapped in the BRILLIANCE of people I know And thought it was unfair - we made our homes there I’d rather go back…..I don’t want to unpack. The garden did grow in the harsh sun - wind and the rain - in the unfriendly sand My papa helped build us a village inside a prison with only his hands HOME - I want to go back - back to our home - HOME - I want to go back - but I guess I’ll unpack Chorus: We will unpack our HOPE - place it next to RESILIENCE - Unwrap the BRILLIANCE of people we know And though it’s still unclear - we’ll make a home here - We long to go back - but I guess we’ll unpack Unpack the fear - in sorrow find joy - Unpack resourcefulness - garbage to toys Unpack the hope, found next to resilience -Together as friends - we’ll unwrap our brilliance The end of war’s here, we’ll leave this behind Go back to our homes, but what will we find (hold) Chorus: Let’s pack up with HOPE - placed next to RESILIENCE Wrap it up in the BRILLIANCE of people we know And thought it was unclear - we’ve made a home here We’re going back…..it’s time that we pack. Now that we’re on the outside of the fence Returned to our homes - getting back on our feet Let’s find a way - to make sure history never repeats Let’s find a way - so this History will never repeat.
